Measuring Temperature

Thermometer comes from the word thermos which means heat and metron which means to measure. They are used to measure body temperature and are the oldest instrument used by humans for this purpose. It has developed a lot since it was invented. In the earlier times, a thermometer worked on the concept of the expansion of liquids or solids because of heat. Depending on the temperature a liquid would expand and thus give a measurement on the amount of heat.

Types of Medical Thermometers

1. Glass and Mercury Thermometers

The most common thermometers were and are glass and mercury thermometers. They have a bulb which is filled with mercury and according to the temperature the mercury would rise in a glass tube. The tube was marked with a scale which gives us a measurement.

2. Digital Thermometers

Today technology has improved the way thermometers work. Digital thermometers work on various concepts and give better and more precise measurements.
