A stethoscope is a device used to listen to the internal sounds of the body. It is one of the most common instruments used by a doctor or any other medical personnel. They are usually used to listen to the heartbeats and diagnose any kind of impairment or abnormal functionality. It is combined with an aneroid sphygmomanometer to measure the blood pressure.
There are four major types of stethoscopes:
It basically consists of three parts, a hollow cup or disc, a hollow tube, and an earpiece. The disc is placed on the body and the sound vibrations travel through the tube and into the earpiece. These are the most basic form of stethoscopes.
These stethoscopes amplify the sounds of the body and give a better acoustic result. But these types of devices have many shortcomings and are hence not widely used.
They are trumpet shaped stethoscopes that are place on the abdomen of a pregnant woman to listen to the sounds of the fetus.
These stethoscopes are electronic and measure the Doppler effect of ultrasound waves reflected from the organs of the body. They are accurate in measuring the movements of constantly moving organs such as the beating heart.
